Dinner was at seven, with brisket, because my mother believes a confession goes down easier with meat.
Anselmo arrived with his wife on his arm, in his best guayabera, and kissed Luz on both cheeks.
Luz ran off to the front room with a bag of toy trucks, and Joaquin's cap lay on the sideboard.
He had not been introduced, and he did not need to be.
Anselmo saw the cap and stopped on the threshold with his smile still in place.
"Serrano," he said. "I heard."
"Mr. Arriaga."
"I will say this once. I did not know."
"Sit down, Tío," I said.
He sat in my father's chair at the foot of the table, and his wife sat beside him with her hands folded very tight.
I passed the rice.
Nobody ate.
"Tío," I said. "Who is on the list at Luz's school?"
His fork stopped halfway to the plate.
"The list?"
"The people allowed to take her home."
"You, Soledad. Me, I suppose. I signed it in September, when you were traveling."
