Chapter 14: The Freight Yard
I knew where he was before the segment ended.
Declan had told me once, in the dark, about the yard office where his grandfather kept the first ledger.
It was a tin-roofed shack behind the south gate, with a desk older than both of us.
He went there when the tower got too loud.
Gwen drove me in the Corolla at eight, with the heater rattling.
"Do you want me to wait?" she said at the gate.
"No."
"Do you want me to wait anyway?"
"Go to work, Gwen."
"Text me a thumbs up if you're alive."
The yard was dark, except for the container cranes blinking red against the river.
A light burned in the shack.
The door was open a hand's width.
He sat at the desk in his shirtsleeves with his tie in a heap on the blotter.
A brown cardboard box of papers stood open at his elbow.
He looked up, and his whole face changed.
"You came," he said.
"I said I'd find you."
He stood so fast that the chair rolled back into the wall.
