Chapter 8: Chairman's Clause
The newspaper hit the doorstep on Monday with my signature on the front page.
It was page four of the contract, the one with the sum.
"BRENNAN'S MAIL-ORDER WIFE," said the headline. "$300,000 FOR A SEAT AT THE FAMILY TABLE."
Under it was a photograph of me at the museum steps, laughing, with the wine stain still on my dress.
Declan read it standing at the kitchen island in his suit.
His jaw was so tight I could see the muscle jump.
"Terrence," he said.
"You can't prove it."
"I don't have to. Only four people had that page. Two are in this building."
He folded the paper in half and set it down very gently.
"The board meets tomorrow at nine," he said. "I'll go in alone. I'll tell them the truth, and I'll resign my seat before they vote it away."
"No."
"Winnie."
"My name is on that page," I said. "Not yours. Yours is just under it, in smaller type."
"I hired you."
"And I said yes. It's my signature too."
