Chapter 16: Scott's Price
The board of Harrington Harbor Group met at eight on Wednesday morning, thirty-one floors above the river.
Nine directors sat around a table of black glass.
Two of them had been in Rupert's dining room the night before, and neither would meet my eyes.
I took the chair against the wall that Scott had pulled out for me.
"You're not on the agenda," said the man with the silver tie.
"My wife is here as my guest," Scott said. "I have an item to add."
"The agenda is closed."
"It is now open."
He stood at the head of the table with one hand in his pocket.
He did not raise his voice.
"I bought Harrington Gallery so my wife would have a place of her own, and then I kept the deed in my name."
He took a folded document from his jacket and laid it on the glass.
"This morning I transferred the gallery, the lease, and the collection to Siobhan Doolan Harrington. It's hers. Not mine, and not the company's."
"Scott, that's nine million dollars of assets."
