Chapter 13: Tea With the Chairman
I told Tae-seong everything in the van, with the engine off and the river still in sight.
The road. The car park. The pink heart on the message.
He listened with both hands on the wheel, and when I finished he did not speak for a long time.
"She sold you," he said at last.
"She sold me for a chair."
"And now she wants the same chair again," he said.
"Yes."
He turned and looked at me, and his face was gentle in a way that frightened me more than anger would have.
"Tell me what you need," he said.
"Not a rescue. A witness." I held out my hand. "Stay close, and say nothing, and let me work."
He took my hand and kissed the knuckles once, hard.
At noon the Chairman's secretary called.
Tea at the Pyeongchang-dong house, at three, Madam Ahn's compliments.
I went.
Tae-seong drove me to the gate, and I made him park a street away.
The Chairman received me in his study, a long room with a black desk and a wall of his own framed handshakes.
