Chapter 22: After the Banquet
Halmoni spoke for four minutes, and nobody in that ballroom coughed.
"I should have said this eight years ago," she said. "I was a coward, and I was proud of my silence."
She leaned on the cane.
"My son put his brother's orphan out of this family because the boy told him a loan was wrong. The boy was right."
The Chairman said, "Mother."
"Sit down, my son. You have spoken enough."
It was the only time I heard anyone order the Chairman, and he sat.
"I hold one fifth of this house in my own hand," she said.
"My husband gave it to me so that no one man could own his work."
"I have voted it for my son for forty years."
The room waited.
"I will not vote it for him tonight, or on any night after."
"A man who calls a theft and then says nothing was ever taken has forgotten what his father built."
She turned to the room.
"Let the board find him a quiet retirement. He is seventy. He has earned a rest, and I mean to see he takes it."
