Chapter 19: The Thumb Drive
Kurt did not look at the thumb drive.
He looked at Pembrey, for a long moment, with his big hands flat on the desk.
"Where did you get that key?" he said.
"Facilities has copies of everything, Kurt. Culture requires access."
"That is a crime."
"That is a spare."
"Get out of my office."
"Friday," said Pembrey. "By six a.m. I want an email in my inbox with the word 'resign' in it."
He glanced once at me.
"Dr. Fairweather, your fellowship is a lovely thing. I would hate to see it become a footnote."
He left, and the door clicked shut.
I sat up with the blanket pulled to my chin.
I wanted to be sick.
Kurt picked up the thumb drive in two fingers and dropped it into the pocket of his coat.
"Don't," I said.
"I'm not going to open it."
"What's on it?"
"Call room two, I assume. And maybe more."
"Oh God."
"Gretchen." He sat down beside me on the couch. "Listen carefully. I am not resigning."
"Kurt..."
"I am not resigning, and I am not letting that thing go out, and I'm going to tell you why, and it takes ten minutes."
"Then tell me."
He leaned forward with his elbows on his knees, and for the first time I saw how tired he was.
"Fourteen years ago I was a resident at this hospital," he said. "I left after my second year."
"Dolores said you sat with her husband the night he died."
"Yes. I left because of a different thing."
"What thing?"
"There was a trainee at my next hospital, a surgical resident," he said. "I won't name her." "Her evaluator, an attending, started sleeping with her."
I went still.
"She didn't want to say no, because he held her whole career in his hand."
