Chapter 16: The Signature
Weston had signed his name under other people's names all his life.
He had signed it under his father's on the day the company changed hands, and under Mr. Kittredge's on the note.
He had signed it under Eliza's, once, five years ago, in the hallway of a hospital, because his mother put the pen in his hand.
At nine the next morning he walked into the district attorney's office with a statement he had written at three a.m., folded in his breast pocket.
The woman at the desk asked if he had an appointment.
"No," he said. "I'm here to confess to a forgery."
She called for an assistant district attorney, a young woman with a legal pad and a tired face.
She led him into a small room and shut the door.
"Mr. Schermerhorn. Has anyone made a complaint against you?"
"No."
"Then I'm not sure what you want from me."
"I signed my wife's name on a letter of forgiveness five years ago." He laid the statement on the table. "It freed a woman named Gretchen Kittredge. My wife never saw it."
"Mr. Schermerhorn, you should have a lawyer present."
"I'll get one. I wanted this on the record first."
She read the statement through, and then she looked at him.
"You understand what this is. It could cost you your company and your freedom."
"Yes."
"Why now?"
"Because last night my son stood at a window and told the woman who hurt his mother that she was lying."
He stopped, and started again.
"I've let other people say my sentences for six years. I'm done."
"The statement names your mother," she said.
"She told me to sign. She put the pen in my hand."
