Chapter 14: What We Never Said

Marit's POV

He gave me the green ledger on Friday night, in the kitchen, and went to stand at the window while I read it.

I read his father's last page twice.

Then I put my hand over my eyes, because I did not want a billionaire to watch me cry at his kitchen island.

"He sounds kind," I said.

"He was," Anselm said, to the window. "I didn't see it."

"I'm sorry about your mother."

"Don't be," he said. "I'm sorry I brought it into your house."

"It was in my house before you were."

Wynne had gone to bed with a mug of tea and a look that said call me if there's blood.

I should have let the quiet stand.

But a thick envelope from the hospital's billing office lay on the island between us, and I had carried it around for four hours.

"Anselm," I said. "Why does this say paid in full?"

He didn't move.

"The ER," I said. "The obstetrician. The clinic's account. And the Ballard mortgage, which was a hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars, and which I have been paying down for six years out of my own wages."

"I can explain," he said.

"Term four. You pay for nothing I haven't asked you to pay for."
