Chapter 15: The Hill
Laskiainen began at noon, and by one o'clock three hundred people stood on Chester Park hill in the sun.
Children dragged sleds up the slope, and the old men raced kicksleds on the packed snow at the bottom.
Mummo's coffee tent stood at the foot of the run, as it had for fifty years.
I stood inside it in my long wool coat, with a paper cup I could not drink from.
Mats stood behind me.
His hand had found the gap between my coat and my sweater.
His thumb lay on the bare strip of my back above my waistband.
It moved once, slowly, along my spine.
Every nerve I had went to that thumb.
"Last chance to tell me no," he said, into my hair.
"I'm not telling you no," I said.
"Then I'll say it where she can hear."
Mummo stood at the stove with her sleeves rolled, ladling coffee into cups for a line of neighbors.
She had not looked at us.
She did not need to.
Out on the snow, a microphone squealed.
"Good afternoon, Duluth!"
It was Wayne's voice, big and warm, coming out of the speakers the park used for the sled races.
