Chapter 8: Aurora
Mats's POV
The Aurora sat at her dock on Saturday night with her engines off and the heater ticking in the wheelhouse.
Snow came across the harbor lights in short bursts, and the canal beyond the glass was black.
I had never brought anyone aboard after dark.
Liisa sat in my captain's chair with her boots up on the rail and a thermos of soup in her lap.
She looked at the brass wheel, and the chart table, and the two radios, and the coffee ring on the sill.
"It's smaller than I thought," she said.
"It's a tugboat."
She turned the chair a quarter turn to look at me.
"I've been looking at the top of this house for three years."
"What did you think was in it?"
"A different kind of man," she said, and drank soup.
I stood in the doorway and found I could not sit down.
"I called the clinic on Friday," I said.
"About what?"
"My count. I asked how many I had left."
She tilted her head.
"What did they say?"
"A woman told me they were redoing the inventory after the storm, and that someone would call me back."
"That's fine," Liisa said, easily.
"That's what I told myself."
She put the thermos down on the sill.
"You don't want to tell me about the count, Captain," she said. "You want to tell me something else."
