Chapter 23: Sunday Counter
He came up the stairs slowly.
He stopped in the doorway in a soaked flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his hands red and raw from two days in hot water.
He didn't come in.
Abel was still on the bed behind me.
He didn't move away, and he didn't go stiff.
He just stayed.
"You can come in," I said.
Cordell came as far as the foot of the bed.
He looked at her.
She was asleep on my chest, wrapped in one of the waitress's flannel shirts because nobody had thought to bring a blanket up.
Her little fist still closed around the end of Abel's finger.
"She's..." Cordell said.
He didn't finish.
"Seven pounds, two ounces," the doctor said, from the dresser. "Loud."
"Can I..."
"Wash your hands," the doctor said.
"I've been washing my hands for two days."
"Wash them again."
He went to the bathroom and washed them.
When he came back I unwrapped Abel's finger from her fist, very gently, and held her out.
Cordell took her.
His big arms were stiff and wrong.
The doctor came over without a word and moved his elbow.
