Chapter 11: The Deed in the Drawer
I drove to the hospital with Kirk's hand on my knee and his coat over my shoulders.
We did not talk about the night before.
We did not need to.
The corridor outside Gran's room was full of people.
My father stood in the middle of it in his good gray suit, holding a clipboard.
Beside him was a lawyer in a tan raincoat and a man in a quilted vest, with a tablet tucked under his arm.
Mom stood a step behind them, and Livia sat in her wheelchair at the wall with the shawl over her knees.
Two nurses and a security guard pretended not to watch from the desk.
"There she is," Dad said. He did not look at Kirk. "Ginny, we were hoping you'd come."
"I came to see what you did to Gran."
"I'm doing what's necessary," Dad said. "Livia has medical bills. Your grandmother can't run that farm with a broken wrist. This buyer has an offer, and I hold her power of attorney."
The man in the vest nodded at me with real politeness.
"Three hundred and ten thousand," he said. "Closing in thirty days."
"For Gran's farm," I said.
"For the land. The house comes down."
Gran's door was open.
She sat up in bed with her wrist in a cast and her hair in a gray braid.
"Son," she said, loudly enough to carry to the desk. "You were a nasty little boy, and you've grown into a nastier old man."
A nurse put her hand over her mouth.
Dad's face went dark.
"Mother, you're on pain medication."
"I'm on pain medication, and I can read," Gran said. "Ginny, look in the drawer."
I opened the bedside drawer.
Under a rosary and a pack of mints lay a folded paper with a county recorder's stamp.
