Chapter 8: Silk Sash
"Tie me up," Zhiyao said.
Wuyan stopped with his mouth against her hip.
"Say that again."
"Tie me up."
She lay across his huge bed in the lamplight, naked, propped on her elbows.
She looked at him down the length of her body.
"I read things. I've wanted to try it."
"What did you read?"
"A great deal of things. In another life."
He sat back on his heels.
His sash lay beside her on the sheet.
It was a long band of dark indigo silk as wide as two fingers, still warm from his waist.
He picked it up and ran it through his hands.
"If anything frightens you," he began.
"Then I'll pull my hands out." She held up her wrists. "Won't I?"
"Yes." He studied her face. "The knot will only look strong."
"Then stop talking and do it, Your Majesty."
His eyes went black.
He took her wrists in one huge hand and raised them above her head.
He looped the silk twice around them.
He took it around the carved post at the head of the bed and tied it off in a neat flat knot.
She tested it.
It held, but there was give in it, and she could feel how easily it would slip if she wanted it to.
The knowledge made her wetter than anything he could have said.
"Comfortable?"
"Yes."
"Good."
He crossed the room, took a second strip of black cloth from a chest, and came back.
"I'd like you to be blind," he said.
"Why?"
"So that you stop thinking, and feel."
The cloth passed over her eyes, and he tied it gently behind her head.
"You think very loudly, Zhiyao."
The dark closed over her.
She heard her own breathing and the creak of the mattress as he sat beside her.
The soft rasp of his beard brushed her ear.
