Chapter 12: Her Handwriting
The Queen Mother's study was dark except for a single candle.
It burned on the desk, and behind the desk, in a high-backed chair, sat the queen.
She had not gone to the cathedral.
"I wondered how long it would take you," she said.
Lucan stopped in the doorway.
I stopped behind him.
The queen was in her black gown with her cane across her knees.
On the desk lay a stack of old pages, a bottle of red-brown ink, and a quill.
"You knew we were coming," Lucan said.
"I have known you all your life. You were always going to break in."
"Mother."
"Sit down, both of you."
We didn't.
"Then stand," said the queen. "It will be shorter."
She slid the top page across the desk with one finger.
It was the bride list.
Seven names, the same names, in a thin hand that slanted to the left.
Across the top, in the same ink, ran a line that I had never seen on the Council's copy.
"Seven names the Council cannot turn down, read before all the court, so he must refuse it aloud."
