Chapter 17: The Forged Seal
Nobody at the table breathed.
Twenty-one councillors and their wives stared at the scroll.
Gresham laid his hand flat beside it with an air of great and gentle sorrow.
"I regret that it has come to this," he said. "I wished to spare the prince public embarrassment. But his behavior leaves me no choice."
"His behavior," said Lucan, very quietly.
"The crown prince is bound by his father's word. The Sitting will only confirm what is already law."
Lucan stood.
He did not shout.
He walked the whole length of the table, past the wives and the baron.
He stopped in front of the scroll.
He read it from top to bottom.
"My father's hand," he said.
"The king's own signature."
"Then you will not mind," Lucan said, "if the princess reads it too."
Ilse had already stood up.
She wiped her fingers on her napkin and came forward with her envoy hurrying after her.
She took the scroll in both hands and looked at the bottom.
Then she laughed.
It was a short, flat laugh, and it made the old councillor beside her flinch.
