Chapter 23: Mine

"Stay where?" I said.

"Here. With me. For the rest of the time I have."

The noise of the chamber came muffled through the alcove curtain, the stamping of feet and the high bright laugh of Ilse.

"Is that an order, Your Highness?"

"It's a question," Lucan said. "I don't know how to ask it in front of a Council."

"Then don't."

"Where would you rather I asked it?"

I looked down at my hands, at the sleeves of the green gown, at my wrists still shaking.

"Somewhere with an oven," I said.

By evening the palace had stopped roaring.

Gresham was in the tower, and the Council had gone home to supper.

The queen had taken Rosalind and Ilse to her private dining room, and I could hear Pip singing in the scullery.

I went down to the kitchen alone and tied on my apron.

I needed something to do with my hands.

So I made the dough for a lemon tart the way my mother had taught me.

I used cold butter and a light touch, and I was floured to the elbows.

I was pressing the crust into the tin when the door opened behind me.

"Don't turn around," Lucan said.
