Chapter 12: The Proclamation
At dawn the Crown's army covered the southern valley.
Ha-rin stood on the south wall in her grey Company coat with her fingers locked in Do-gyeom's.
He had not let go of her hand since the loft.
When she shivered, he lifted it to his mouth and kissed her knuckles, once, in front of the whole wall.
"Six thousand," Gwang-ho said quietly, at her other side. "Maybe seven. Spears, crossbows, the heavy cavalry. And siege towers on carts."
"We have eight hundred," said Do-gyeom.
"I can count, boss."
"Count again."
The whole Company lined the wall behind them, silent.
Ha-rin looked at the black-and-gold banners and felt the world tilt.
She had never once imagined them pointed at a man who had taught her to shoot a bow.
"They didn't come for grain," she said.
"No."
"They didn't come for a ransom or a tax."
