Chapter 13: The Hearing
I took the phone.
It was warm from his pocket.
My thumb found the button on the side.
Rhett's hand closed over mine.
"Not here," he said. "Not tonight."
"I need to hear it."
"You'll hear it tomorrow. With every pack in the South listening." He looked at Rawlins. "If she hears it tonight and there's a problem with it, I want to know before Celia does."
He played it himself, alone in his study with the door shut.
Rawlins sat on the kitchen floor with Mae's old healer bag while I stitched his side.
He swore the whole time.
After ten minutes Rhett came back out.
His face had gone very still.
"It's her," he said.
That was all he said.
He locked Rawlins in the Callahan cellar with four guards on the door. Magnolia Creek wolves, all of them. Nobody from the summit.
I didn't sleep.
At six, Mae called from the hospital.
"They're letting me out at nine," she said. "I'll be there."
"Mae, your legs."
"My legs are fine, baby. I'll be there."
