Chapter 19: Calling the Council
"Every pack," I said.
"Every pack," said the old man. "The east slope. The river packs. The high meadow wolves. The Mardells too. Every alpha in the Greywater, standing at these stones, in human form, to hear what the Gap has to say."
"When?"
"The warden of the Gap names the night."
I didn't have to think.
"The full moon," I said. "The night the Trials end. The night Alden runs out."
Hettie, wrapped in three blankets on the ground with a cup of broth, made a small noise.
"That's four days," she said.
"Three and a bit," said the honey elder.
"That's worse."
They carried me back to the warden house because my legs still didn't work.
Conall carried me, technically.
The wardens filled the long stone room. Somebody had killed two hares. The big bald woman had made dumplings the size of fists.
The gray brothers argued about who had boosted Hettie better. The lanky one fell asleep in his bowl.
The woman with the baby put the baby in my lap again without asking.
"Congratulations," she said. "Hold him. I'm going to eat with both hands."
I held him.
He grabbed my braid and tried to eat it.
Hettie sat beside me with her new ward lines still wet on her knuckles, cut by the old man an hour before.
She kept turning her hands over and staring at them.
"My granny," she kept saying. "In gloves. For thirty years."
At the head of the table, the old man wrote the call.
He didn't write it fancy.
The Warden of Cinder Gap calls the territory council to the stones at the full moon.
Come and hear what happened at the Gap eight years ago.
