Chapter 7: Where the Blade Fell

Sabine's POV

He did not answer for a long moment.

Then he set the lamp on the table and crossed the room to me.

"Show me where you want me to start," Rorik said, "and I'll tell you what I know."

"At the beginning."

"The beginning is your throat."

He lifted his hand, and I held still.

His fingers touched the line the sword had left under my jaw, and traced it, so light I felt it more than the skin.

"Here," he said. "I say something to you first. Always the same thing."

"You wished for this."

His fingers stopped.

"You remember."

"I remember every time."

"I have never said it aloud to anyone. I thought it was only in my head."

His hand slid down the side of my neck to the hollow of my collarbone.

My breath went uneven, and I let it.

"Here the blade goes in, from above. The second dream."

His thumb moved to the place under my left breast.

"Here. The third."

I wore a torn tunic and the cloth was thin, and I could feel the heat of his hand through it.

"The fourth is the belly," he said.

His palm flattened on my stomach, over the place the spear had opened me.

The skin there was smooth.

His voice had gone rough.

"The fifth is the back, between the shoulders. I never see who holds the blade."

"A wolf," I said. "You, at the edge of the field. I ran from you that time."

His hand moved around my waist, slowly, and found the place along my ribs.

"Six," he said. "I put it in under the arm. You never make a sound."
