Chapter 16: Delphine at the Counter
Delphine Chisolm did not wait her turn.
She walked past the customers in line, in a white wool coat and white gloves.
She set a leather briefcase on my counter between the scones and the cash register.
The line went quiet from the door to the back.
A woman from the dry cleaner's stopped halfway through counting out her change.
"Miss Dahlgren," Delphine said.
"Miss Chisolm."
"I have a proposal.
"I'd prefer to make it privately."
"I'm busy," I said, "but you can make it now."
She looked at the line.
She looked at Griffin, who stood two feet from me at the register in my second-best apron.
He held a croissant in a paper bag.
His face was as blank as a plate.
"Griffin," she said.
"Tell her to be reasonable."
"Ask the baker," Griffin said.
Her jaw flexed.
She opened the briefcase and took out a sheet of paper and a check, and laid them both on the glass.
"Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars," she said.
"For your lease, your equipment, and your name.
"And a storefront on Third Street, in my father's building, rent-free for five years.
"You would never have to rise at four again."
She said it sweetly.
She looked me up and down with her pale eyes, the apron, the flour on my forearms, and let the glance rest on my waist.
"I assume the arrangement with Griffin has been generous," she said.
"I assume you've been well compensated.
"It would be a shame to let a girl like you lose everything over a phase."
