Chapter 22: Midwinter

Midwinter fell on a Saturday, and it snowed the whole day.

By eight in the evening the lodge was lit by two hundred candles and the hearth fire roared.

Three hundred wolves sat in rows facing the flat gray stone.

I stood on it.

I wore the emerald velvet wrap dress from Harbor Night, my grandmother's pearls, and my good boots, and my hands did not shake.

Gran Lu sat in the front row in her best black cardigan with her purse in her lap.

Griffin stood to my left on the hearthstone, a step behind me, in a charcoal suit, with his hands clasped behind his back.

He had not looked at me once since we came in.

Delphine's father had read the order of the evening in his hall voice.

Then Delphine rose from the first row in a gown the color of ice.

She walked to the lectern at the edge of the hearth, and the whole hall went quiet.

"I will be brief," she said.

"We are a pack that has endured for three hundred years on one thing: we choose our own.

"The Alpha's chosen mate must be a wolf, who can stand beside him when the winter comes and the river rises.

"Miss Dahlgren is a kind woman.

"She is also a baker who has known us for two months."

She turned to me with her lovely, poisonous smile.

"She was drawn into this by a trick of custom.
