Chapter 10: Day Four

The next morning Jillian found me in the powder room off the Sabatini front hall.

She shut the door, leaned her back against it, and checked her lipstick in the mirror.

"Happy day four," she said.

I dried my hands slowly.

"You said tomorrow morning. It's morning."

"It's been morning for hours, Wynnie." She capped the lipstick. "Your three days ran out at breakfast. Go on. Tell him."

I was scared, and I said it anyway.

"I will."

"Tell him what, exactly?"

"That you sold the docks to Crowe. Nine times."

She turned from the mirror and smiled, warm and sorry, and my stomach turned over.

"Okay. And how do you know that?"

"I have a drive."

"From Desmond Crowe. The man who tried to hire you." She folded her arms. "That's a man who wants the Sabatinis to eat each other. And he handed his enemy's girlfriend a ledger with my initials on it. Think about how that sounds."

"I have a recording of him, too. He says you tell him quite a lot."

"Does he say it was me?"

I hesitated.

"No," I said.

"Does he say my name?"

"No."

"Then he's a rival boss, and you're a girl who sat in a private room with him for five minutes and recorded it in secret." Jillian's voice stayed kind. "Nico loves you. Ottavio doesn't. You hand that to Ottavio, and the next thing he asks you is why you were in the room."

She was right, and I hated it.

"There are also logs from the dock server with your key on them," I said.
