Chapter 4: The Docks

The Elizabeth terminal smelled of diesel and cold salt water at four in the morning.

Gia and I walked into the dock office behind two of Ottavio's guards.

The room was full of men in dark coats, and every one of them turned to look at me.

Ottavio sat at the end of a steel table with his coat still on.

"Wynne," he said, and pulled out the chair next to his own. "Sit."

I sat.

Nico was at the far wall with a laptop open on a filing cabinet, and Jillian stood beside him, already typing.

Nico looked up and frowned at me.

"Why is she here?"

"Because I asked for her," Ottavio said. "A man should know who sits at his table."

Nico said nothing, but his jaw moved.

On the wall behind him a screen showed the shipping manifest.

I read it from my chair.

The three containers had been rerouted at 1:52 a.m. by a clerk's login, and the login had been valid for three days.

I knew that kind of hole.

I had closed ten of them.

"They used an old session token," I said. "From Tuesday. Someone copied it when the door was open and kept it."

Nobody looked at me.

"Revoke the token and the reroute locks. Then you can see where the containers went."

Nico glanced over at me with a tired, patient face.

"Wynne, baby, it's not that simple. Let us work."

"It is that simple. It's one line."

"I know you want to help." He turned back to the screen. "But this is why I wanted you home."
