Chapter 6: The Ledger

Jillian held out her hand.

"Coffee," she said. "Sure. Show me where."

"Jillian, leave her alone," Gia said, coming up on my other side. "She's cold and she's tired. Wynne, come wash your face. My office has a bathroom."

She hooked her arm through mine and walked me out of the room before Jillian could answer.

Gia's office was at the end of the dock hall, with a space heater, a pink desk lamp and a couch covered in sample fabrics.

She locked the door.

"Okay," she said. "What did he give you?"

I looked at her.

She waited, with her arms folded and her gold hoops perfectly still.

"I can't tell you how I know what's on it," I said. "I can tell you that I don't trust it, and I need a laptop that isn't mine."

"That's not how this works."

"Gia."

"That's a lot of weird in one sentence."

She stared at me a second longer.

Then she took her laptop out of a drawer and opened it.

"Don't tell me what's on it either," she said. "Just sit."

I sat at her desk, plugged in the drive, and opened it.

There was one file, a spreadsheet, and nine rows.

Each row had a date, a container number, a wire amount and a set of initials.

*Mon 3/4. Elizabeth, C-4471. $40,000. PH.*

*Thu 4/18. Elizabeth, C-5120. $40,000. PH.*

I read down the column, and my stomach dropped lower with every line.

The last row was dated Monday night, the night before the dock hole.
