Chapter 6: The Principal's Office

On Monday morning a hall monitor handed me a pink slip in second period.

It said: Principal's office, now.

I walked down the long corridor with my backpack on and my pulse loud in my ears.

Through the glass of the office door I saw my parents already sitting down, side by side, in their church clothes.

My mother had a tissue in her hand.

My counselor stood against the wall with her arms folded, and she caught my eye and gave one short nod.

I went in.

"Ingrid," the principal said. She was a tall woman with a grey bun and a voice that had settled a thousand fights. "Sit, please. Your parents have asked for a meeting."

I stayed standing.

"I'd like to hear what they asked for."

My father turned his chair a few degrees toward me.

"We're worried about you, Ingrid. That's all this is."

"Then say it to the principal."

He sighed in a pained way and faced her.

"Our daughter left home on Thanksgiving, in front of the whole family. She is living above a store with an elderly woman we don't know. She has quit speaking to us. She has been under a great deal of pressure, and we think she may not be thinking clearly."

"She is eighteen," my counselor said from the wall.

"Which is exactly why we're concerned," my mother said, and her voice shook on cue. "She doesn't know what she's doing. She's applying to colleges we haven't even seen. We'd like the school to hold her recommendation letters until we've had a chance to talk to her."

"And a wellness evaluation," my father added. "For her own safety."
