Chapter 18: Pay the Crews
The notary was waiting on the steps of the bank at half past eight.
He had a leather folder under one arm and the face of a man who had not slept either.
"Signorina," he said. "Your father has made a mistake."
"Which one?"
"He froze the accounts by telephone. The company's rules say that nothing may be suspended without the consent of the holder of the majority vote."
He tapped the folder.
"That holder is you."
Hanna, Fiammetta and Gaetano climbed the steps behind me.
Ugo had not come.
I had not expected him, and I looked for him anyway.
Inside, the branch hall was full of people.
Shipping agents stood in a long queue at the counters, holding payroll sheets.
A harbor pilot's wife was arguing with a clerk about a mortgage.
A boy in a hi-vis jacket sat with a bag of cash envelopes on his knee, looking lost.
"Forty crews," the manager was saying to the agents, hands raised. "I understand. The chairman himself instructed us. Until the court rules, nothing leaves."
"My men have families!" shouted a heavy agent. "It is the first of the month!"
"I am very sorry."
"Good morning," I said.
Every head turned.
I was sixteen years old, in a gray school coat, and I had walked into a bank with a notary and three young people who looked like they had been up all night.
"I am Nerina Falconieri," I said. "I hold fifty-one percent of Falconieri Maritime."
The manager's mouth opened.
"Signorina, with respect, a minor cannot give instructions."
