Chapter 22: Fifty-One Percent Carries
"A forgery," I said.
"A child can make a voice say anything," my father repeated, and looked around the room for agreement.
He did not find it.
At the next table the oldest board member put down his napkin and stood up.
"Baldassare," he said. "I knew your mother for fifty years."
"Then you know she wasn't herself."
"I know exactly how she spoke when she was angry. I have just heard her do it." He turned to the guests. "I would stake my own shares on that voice."
"And I," said a stout man near the front.
"And I," said the woman beside him.
One chair after another scraped back across the gallery.
The notary rose from the far wall, where he had been standing unnoticed since the soup.
"For the record," he said, "I have the physician's letter from the week she died, and it says she was entirely lucid. I put it before the court on Friday. The chairman has seen it."
My father said nothing.
"And the physician who signed your letter about his daughter, Baldassare," the notary went on, mildly. "I should like his name."
My father's jaw moved.
"It is a private matter."
"Then it does not exist," said the oldest board member, loudly.
A ripple of laughter went through the room, short and hard.
I stepped out from behind the high table into the open floor.
My legs were not steady, so I put one hand on the back of a chair.
"I am not going to ask you to like me," I said. "I'm going to ask you to do your jobs."
