Chapter 7: The Yellow Sign
I opened the pedestrian gate myself.
It stuck on its hinge, and a security guard stepped forward from the lodge to stop me.
"I own this wall," I told him, which was not true, but he hesitated long enough.
The old housekeeper slipped through, and I pulled the gate shut on the flashing lights.
We walked up the drive together.
She was shaking, and she held her bag in front of her with both arms.
Ugo stood on the gravel with his mouth shut, and he did not try to stop us.
I took her through the kitchen door, away from the hall and the staircase, and sat her at the scrubbed table where the cook shelled peas.
The staff had all gathered to watch.
"Please leave us," I said to them.
They went.
I poured her a glass of water, because it was the only thing in that house that I knew how to give.
She drank half of it with both hands.
"You've gotten tall," she said, and her eyes filled.
"You taught me to tie my shoes on that floor."
"I know I did, little one."
She put the glass down.
"I have been wanting to say this for four years," she said. "I have said it to the wall in my kitchen. I have said it to my priest."
"Say it to me."
She breathed in.
"It was a Thursday," she said. "Your father had guests coming that afternoon. Bankers. The signor told me to wash the hall until it shone."
I held very still.
"I washed it. Then I put out the yellow sign, the one that says the floor is wet, at the top of the stairs. I always did."
"I remember the sign," I said slowly.
"You do?"
"I remember it lying on its side, afterward."
"Because your father kicked it," she said. "He came into the hall to check my work, and he saw the sign, and he said, Take that away. My guests do not want to see a plastic warning in my house."
