Chapter 11: The Morning After

I didn't answer Chloe.

I turned the phone over, and Flynn took it out of my hand and set it on the counter, screen down.

"You're shaking," he said.

"I'm fine."

"You're a liar. A good one, but still." His voice dropped. "Do you want me to go?"

I looked at him in the dim kitchen, with his jacket still in one fist and sticky lemon icing on the cuff.

"No," I said. "I want you to stay. I don't want to talk about my father. I don't want to think about my father."

"Okay."

"I want to think about you."

He was very still.

"Saskia." My name came out of him rough. "I'm not going to be the thing you do because tonight was terrible."

"You weren't the terrible part." I stepped forward until I was against him. "You were the cutting table. I wanted this before the porch, before my father, before any of it. I told myself it was the solvent."

His breath caught.

"The solvent," he said.

"Don't laugh at me."

"I'm not laughing."

He kissed me, and it wasn't careful this time.

My back met the refrigerator door and a magnet fell off and skidded across the floor, and neither of us cared.

His hands were at my waist, and then under the edge of my shirt, warm and ink-stained against my ribs, and I made a sound I had never made before.

"House rule," he said against my throat. "Tell me if it's too much."
