Chapter 19: Six Weeks and One Day

At six weeks and one day, the doctor at Lakeshore signed my chart and told me I could do whatever my body wanted.

I did not tell her what my body wanted.

I drove home with my son asleep in the back and a smile I could not get off my face.

Bree met me in the driveway with a diaper bag over each shoulder.

"I'm taking both of them to Corey's," she said. "He's earned a night with his daughter."

"You're taking mine too."

"Corey has two arms." She would not look at me. "It's practice."

"Bree."

"Don't thank me. Just lock the door."

She buckled my son into the car beside her own daughter and drove off with her hand out of the window, waving.

Ansel was at the stove when I walked into the kitchen.

He had been back on Engine 14 for four weeks, with Dalton riding the jump seat behind him and calling him Lieutenant without a flicker.

He was off shift tonight, in a gray T-shirt with the sleeves pushed up, and he was stirring a pot nobody had asked for.

I leaned in the doorway.

"Cleared," I said.

He went still with the spoon in the air.

"Tonight," I said.

He put the spoon down very carefully and turned off the burner.

Then he walked to me, and he did not hurry, and my knees went before he touched me.

He kissed me against the doorframe, deep and slow, with one hand spread on my ribs.

"Say it again," he said against my mouth.

"Tonight."

"Upstairs."

"The little bedroom," I said. "Door shut."

I took his hand and pulled him up the stairs.

The window was open, and the lake was loud in the dark.

I stood in front of him and pulled my dress over my head, and then I did not know what to do with my hands.

My belly was soft and marked, my breasts were heavier than they had been, and I had never once undressed in front of a man while I was afraid of what he'd see.
