Chapter 14: Nobody Hunting

The Queen's rider had asked for the case, the scribe and the general to come to the capital in three weeks.

Rin had said yes, signed the receipt, and gone back to bed.

That was last night.

This morning, for the first time in two years, nobody was hunting Kaede Sorano.

Rin woke in the farmhouse room Ume had given them, with grey light through the paper window and no horn in the distance.

Kaede was asleep on her back beside her.

She slept with one arm over her head and her mouth a little open.

Her armor stood empty on its stand in the corner.

Rin lay on her side and looked.

She had never watched Kaede sleep.

In the camp Kaede had always been awake first.

She sat on the cot's edge with her back to the wall and her eyes on the flap.

Now the scar on her chin looked pale and small.

Her cropped hair stuck up on the left, and the long lines of her body lay loose under the quilt.

Rin put out one finger and traced the line of her collarbone.

Kaede's breath hitched, and her eyes opened, dark and soft.

"Hi," she said, rough with sleep.

"Hi."

"Is it real?"

"It's real."

"Say it."

"Nobody's coming,"

Rin said.

"Nobody's watching the door."

"We have the whole day, and Ume is feeding the whole army, and I have nowhere to be."

Kaede's shoulders lowered, a faint tremor running through her.

Then she smiled, slow and crooked, and Rin forgot the rest of the sentence.

"Come here," Kaede said.

"No."

"No?"

"You stay on your back," Rin said. "You don't move. This morning is mine."

Kaede's eyes darkened.

"How long?"

"As long as I want."

"Yes, ma'am."

Rin pushed the quilt down.

Kaede lay bare in the grey light, long and strong, with a pale scar across her ribs and another along her hip.

Rin had seen them by lamplight a dozen times.

She had never seen them with time.

She straddled Kaede's hips and sat back on her heels, in nothing but her loosened braid.

Kaede's hands twitched at her sides, and she kept them there.

"Good," Rin said.

She bent and kissed the scar on Kaede's chin.

Then the corner of her mouth, and the hinge of her jaw, and the hollow under her ear.

She kissed her way down the cords of her neck, slow, one kiss at a time.

Kaede's breathing grew louder.

"What's this one?" Rin murmured, at the scar across the ribs.

"A spear. The first winter."
