Chapter 2: The Cot

Kaede pulls Rin onto her lap and shows her what two lonely years can do with one hand. Rin learns nobody goes home, and at dawn a horn sounds from the hero's camp.

The stew arrived on a tray carried by a small square woman with white hair tied up in a cloth.

She put it down in front of Rin, looked her over from braid to hem, and clucked her tongue.

"Too thin," she said. "And ink on her. Is this the hero's scribe?"

"This is Rin," Kaede said. "Rin, this is Ume. She feeds the whole camp, and she's in charge of me."

"Somebody has to be." Ume patted Rin's shoulder. "Eat, little inkpot. Every bite."

Rin ate every bite.

It was barley and radish and a little salted pork.

It was the best thing she had eaten since she was summoned.

When Ume had gone, Kaede stretched her legs under the table.

She had not taken off a single piece of armor.

"Ask it," Kaede said.

"Ask what?"

"Whatever you've been chewing on since you sat down."

Rin set her spoon in the empty bowl.

"Can you go home?"

"No."

Kaede said it fast.

"The circle works one way. The priests told me in my first month. I asked three times and cried the second."

Rin nodded slowly.

She had known.

She had only wanted to hear it from someone who had no reason to lie.

"I didn't have much to go back to," Rin said. "A rented room. Freelance contracts. A mother who calls on Sundays."

"And Sora."

"Sora dumped me by text fourteen months ago."

Kaede's eyebrows went up.

"He what?"

"'I think we want different things.' That was the whole message."

Rin laughed, and it came out sharper than she meant.

"I read it on the train and missed my stop."

"Two weeks later he vanished from Tokyo, and everybody said it was grief."

"I'm going to hit him."

"You're going to have to wait in line."

"I mean it. I'm going to hit him so hard he sees his own back."

Rin laughed again, properly this time, with her hand over her mouth.

When she looked up, Kaede was watching her with a quiet, unguarded face.

"I missed that," Kaede said. "Someone laughing in my tent."

"You haven't had anyone?"

"I've had three thousand people who follow my orders."

"That's not the same."

Kaede turned her cup a quarter turn on the table.

"It's been two years since anyone put a hand on me that wasn't a handshake or a pat on the shoulder."

The lamp hissed.

Rin heard her own heartbeat in her ears.

"I could," she said.

"Could what?"

"Put a hand on you."

Kaede did not move.

"Rin."

"You're my brother's ex."

"You're my hostage."

"I'm the general you were sent to record, and half the camp thinks you're a spy."

"Tell me to stop," Rin said, and got up.

She walked around the table.

She was a head and a half shorter than Kaede, even with Kaede sitting down.

She had never in her life done anything this stupid.

She put her inky hand flat against the black plate over Kaede's chest.

She felt a heart under it thudding as hard as her own.

Kaede did not tell her to stop.

Kaede took her by the waist and pulled her into her lap, plates and all.

The first kiss was hot and clumsy and open-mouthed.

Rin tasted tea.

She grabbed the red cord at Kaede's throat to hold on.

Kaede made a low sound into her mouth that went straight between Rin's legs.

"Rin," Kaede said against her lips. "Rin."

"Say it again."

"Rin."

The armor was cold through Rin's robe, and her knees sat either side of Kaede's thick, strong thighs.

Kaede's hands slid under the robe's hem.

They went up the backs of Rin's legs, slow, rough with calluses.

They closed over the curve of her ass and squeezed.

"God," Rin whispered. "Your hands."

"Too rough?"

"No. More."

Kaede's mouth went to her neck, and she kissed it hard enough to leave a mark.

One hand stayed on Rin's ass and the other went around the front, between her thighs.

Found the cotton of her underwear soaked through.

Rin heard herself gasp.

Kaede stopped moving.

"You're wet," Kaede said, in a voice gone rough. "Already."

"I've been wet since you took my hand."

Kaede made a sound.

She hooked a finger into the cotton, pulled it aside.

Traced one slow line along Rin's pussy from the bottom to the top.

Rin's whole body jerked.

"There," Kaede said. "That's where you like it."

"Don't talk. Do it."

Kaede did.

She circled Rin's clit with the pad of her thumb, slow and firm.

Rin dropped her forehead to the armor over Kaede's shoulder and held on.

Two fingers pressed against her.

They went in, thick and slow, and Rin moaned loud enough that the guard outside coughed.

"Quiet," Kaede murmured, smiling. "They can hear you."

"Let them."

"You're sure?"

"Fuck me, Kaede."

Kaede curled her fingers up.

Rin's breath broke.

The pad of Kaede's finger found the place inside her that made her thighs shake.

Pressed there, and rubbed, and the thumb on her clit kept time.

Rin rode the hand.

She could not help it.

Her hips rolled on their own, her wet cunt slid up and down Kaede's knuckles.

The plates of Kaede's armor scraped the inside of her thighs.

Every roll made a sound, slick and obscene in the quiet tent.

"That's it," Kaede said. "Use me. Take what you want."

"Kaede."

"You feel so good. You're so tight. I can feel you holding on."

"Don't stop."

"Never."

Kaede added a third finger, and the stretch made Rin's mouth fall open.

She came with her face buried in the red cord.

She bit the cry into the leather while her whole body shuddered in Kaede's lap.

Kaede held her through all of it, one arm tight around her back.

Her fingers kept moving, slower and slower, as the waves ebbed.

Then Kaede pulled her hand free and wiped it on a cloth, slow and careful.

Rin sagged against the armor.

Her ears were ringing.

"Okay," she said hoarsely. "That's a very good first hello."

"I haven't even taken off my boots."

"Then take them off. I'm not done with you."

Kaede laughed, a real laugh, deep and astonished.

They did not sleep.

Rin got the boots off, and the gauntlets, and Kaede let her.

They lay on the cot in the dark with their legs tangled and talked about Tokyo.

Vending machines, the last train, the convenience store that sold the good melon bread.

Kaede fell silent in the middle of a sentence about it.

Rin kissed her on the scarred chin until she started again.

It was grey outside when the horn sounded.

It came from across the river, long and bright, the kind of note a trumpet makes at dawn.

Rin lifted her head.

The tent flap was a grey square.

"That's the hero's horn," Kaede said. She did not let go of Rin. "That's Sora, calling the camp."

"We have to stop him."

"We have to," Kaede agreed, and kissed her again, hard.
