Chapter 10: The Envoy
Tak Ha-neul stood in the middle of the Red Lantern Hall at dawn with no mask and a drawn sword, shouting at the Heavenly Demon.
He was twenty years old, six feet tall, as thin as a bean pole, and muddy to the knees.
Three hundred cult members stood along the walls with their mouths hanging open.
"I'm Tak Ha-neul!" he shouted. "The Jade Sword of the Righteous Alliance! Give me my senior brother, you giant!"
"Ha-neul," Si-hyeon said from behind the throne.
The boy's head whipped around.
His eyes went from Si-hyeon's face to the black sword at his hip, to the black robe, and back.
"Senior brother," he said. "Oh, gods. They dressed you like one of them."
"It's a nice robe."
"They broke your spirit!"
"Only a little."
Ha-neul charged across the hall.
Si-hyeon stepped off the dais, caught him by the front of his shirt, and stopped him dead.
Then he hugged him.
The boy was shaking.
He smelled of horse and river and the same cheap hair oil that had clung to the silver mask, and for a moment Si-hyeon couldn't speak.
"I told you not to come," Si-hyeon said into his collar.
"I know. I read your letter. It was the worst forgery I've ever seen."
"It wasn't a forgery."
"You said the food was excellent."
"It was."
"You hate food!"
Si-hyeon held on a second longer and let go.
"I brought tea," Ha-neul said with great dignity, and pulled a dented tin from his sleeve. "The note said good tea."
Behind Si-hyeon, the Demon made a sound that might have been a cough.
Ha-neul spun on him, sword up.
