Chapter 24: The Wrong Disciple
Three hundred and eleven guests ate dumplings in the Red Lantern Hall, and Bi Soo-ryeon wept openly into a sleeve and told anyone who looked that it was the smoke.
The hall had been hung with new lanterns.
They were red, as always, but each had a small blue ribbon tied at the base, and the ribbons were Ha-neul's idea.
The Alliance Chief sat at the high table in his plain brown robe, eating a chicken leg with perfect composure.
The fat man from the Hwa benches sat three seats down and was already drunk.
The twelve Azure Cloud juniors had taken over the long table by the east wall.
The skinny boy had gotten his hands on the rice wine and was making a speech that nobody could follow.
Si-hyeon stood in the middle of it all in a red robe.
Red was the cult's color for weddings, Bi Soo-ryeon said, and it didn't suit his complexion, and she had made him wear it anyway.
His hair was tied up with a black cord.
A very large man stood beside him in black and red, with his hair in a high knot for the first time Si-hyeon had ever seen, and a flush running from his collar to his ears.
"You look ridiculous," Si-hyeon whispered.
"Thank you."
"I mean you look lovely."
"You said ridiculous."
"I meant both."
The Chief rose.
He didn't say much, because he was not a man who did, and Si-hyeon was grateful.
He read the treaty first, the hundred-year truce, in a dry plain voice that made half the hall yawn, and then he put it down and looked at the two of them.
"I am told," he said, "that there are vows."
"There are," Si-hyeon said.
"Make them short. The chicken is getting cold."
Someone laughed.
Gwi-han turned to face Si-hyeon.
Si-hyeon had to tip his head all the way back to see his face, as he always did.
He had stopped minding somewhere around the second week.
"I don't have a speech," Gwi-han said.
