Keira sat back in her chair and waited for me to cry.
Malachy's sisters were very still at the next table.
The girl behind the counter had stopped steaming milk.
I didn't cry.
I looked at Keira's glossy pink mouth and thought about where it had learned those words.
"Where is he tonight?" I asked.
She blinked at me.
She'd come ready for anything but that.
"Boston," she said sulkily. "His mother's having a dinner for his brother. Welcome home, the whole family. I'm not allowed through the door."
"But Colleen is."
Keira's eyes slid away from mine.
"Colleen's family now. That's what she says."
I stood up, and my chair scraped loud on the tiles.
"Thank you, Keira. You've been very helpful."
She stared up at me.
"That's it? I tell you that, and you say thank you?"
"What did you want me to say?"
"I wanted you to..."
She stopped.
The youngest sister still had her phone held up beside Keira's face, screen out.
"She wanted you to cry on camera," the youngest said. "Bad luck, sweetie."
