Chapter 18: Mine to Show
I didn't step back from her.
"Friday at nine," I said. "I'll be up early."
Colleen searched my face for the crack she'd come to find.
She didn't find it.
She pulled Keira up the steps past me, and they went out through the gate and across the square without looking back.
The old man from number nine put his hat back on.
He went home to his own steps and his own newspaper.
On Friday morning the plaque on the reading room door was still under a green cloth.
The reading room was on the fifth floor, a long quiet room with tall windows and oak tables.
It held four hundred diaries, most of them by women nobody remembered.
I'd sat at the third table from the window every day since January.
At half past eight it was full of people holding coffee in paper cups.
The chair was there in his good jacket, and my advisor with her grey braids pinned up.
Half the faculty had come, and more students than I'd ever seen awake before ten.
A red ribbon had been strung across the door, and a pair of silver scissors lay on a table beside it.
