Chapter 16: Over the Hardware Store
Bridget lives over the hardware store on Main Street, and the stairs up to her door smell like paint thinner.
I climbed them at seven that night with a foil pan of mac and cheese I had made from my mother's card.
I knocked, and nobody answered.
I knocked again and said, "I have the baked kind with the breadcrumbs."
The door opened four inches.
Bridget stood there in a hoodie with her curly red hair pulled up in a rubber band and her eyes swollen.
"That's low," she said.
"It's true."
"You can't buy your way out of this with carbs."
"Can I buy my way in with them?"
She looked at the pan for a long time.
Then she stepped back and let me in.
Her kitchen is the size of a closet and hung with every pot she has ever been given.
She took two forks out of a drawer, handed me one, and sat on the counter.
We ate straight from the pan.
"You lied to me," she said, with her mouth full.
"I did."
"Not about the sex. I don't care about the sex. Okay, I care a little. About the lying."
"I couldn't tell you, because I made a rule with him and I wanted it to hold."
"For one night."
"For one night. I wanted something in my life that nobody had a vote on."
She stopped chewing.
"Hattie. Everybody in that cohort has had a vote on you since Friday."
"I know."
"I would have kept it. I kept it when you cried on my floor after the funeral and I never said a word to anyone. I have a very good mouth for keeping things."
