Chapter 17: Hers
"Who buys a hotel at auction?" Dale said from the doorway.
He was in his robe, holding a coffee cup he'd forgotten to drink from.
"Somebody from Atlanta who turns it into condos," Dorrie said. "Or a chain that wants the address and none of the people."
"How many people?"
"A hundred and forty."
The kitchen went quiet.
I knew most of those people.
The pastry chef who let me lick the whisk when I was six.
The bell captain who taught me to tie a bow tie.
The housekeeper on the fourth floor who kept peppermints in her apron for me.
Somebody knocked on the back door.
Nana got there first, because Nana always did.
The doorman stood on the step in a short-sleeved shirt and a straw hat.
I'd never seen him out of the gray coat in my life.
He looked smaller without it.
"I'm sorry to come to the kitchen, Miss Tallulah," he said. "I didn't want to use the front. People talk."
"Come in," Nana said. "Sit down before you fall down."
She put a biscuit in front of him before he'd finished sitting.
He didn't touch it.
"They posted the notice in the staff room at eight this morning," he said. "Then Mrs. Ballantyne came in at ten."
