Chapter 20: Sit Down, Garner

Conor's POV

Garner stood with his empty hand still half closed.

He looked at it for a moment.

Then he turned toward the dining room door, buttoning his jacket.

"Sit down, Garner," Rhea said.

She didn't raise her voice.

She said it in the voice she used across a crowded counter, to a man who wasn't ready for his check.

"Eat first."

He stopped.

Forty people were looking at him, and every one of them had heard her.

I watched his face.

He understood that if he walked out now, he walked out on a waitress's instruction.

If he stayed, he obeyed it.

He sat.

Rhea took a clean plate from the sideboard.

Her hands weren't quite steady.

I could see the edge of the plate shake against her thumb.

She carried it down the whole length of the table, past the directors and the wives and the gravy boat.

She put it in front of him.

She served him turkey with the silver spoon, and stuffing, and one spoonful of cranberry at the side.

She did it neatly.

She did it exactly as she did it at the diner.
