Chapter 10: Workbench
The bike shop smelled of chain lube and rubber.
I sat on the edge of its workbench with my skirt pushed up around my hips.
He had locked the front door at seven.
The owner had gone home an hour before.
The dogs were asleep on a cushion in the front window, Waffles on top of Tank, both of them gone.
In the back repair room, under a bare bulb, a dozen frames hung from hooks on the wall.
A bike sat in a work stand with its wheel off, mid-repair, and a tool tray beside it held every wrench in North Carolina.
"Come here," I said.
"I'm here."
"Closer."
He stood between my knees, in a gray work shirt with grease on his forearm and the cardinal underneath.
I held up my phone.
On the screen was the app, and in the middle of it, in a little box, the words: Connected.
He had given me the code on the drive home from Cary the night before.
He had done it without being asked, with his eyes on the road.
"Take your pants off," I said. "No. Take mine off."
He knelt.
There was a black rubber mat under the work stand, thick and pitted.
He went down on it with his knees apart and slid my underwear down my legs, one slow inch at a time.
The egg was already inside me.
I'd put it in before I left my desk, in a bathroom stall at the dental office.
