Chapter 14: Nothing Else
Tara's POV
He carried the desk chair into my bedroom at nine o'clock and set it at the foot of my bed.
He turned it to face me, sat down in it with his boots planted and his phone in his hand, and did not take off a single thing.
"Lamp stays on," he said.
"It's always on now."
"Good. Two rules, and then I'm done talking about rules."
I stood at the side of the bed in my robe, shaking a little.
"Stop," he said. "Or red. Those two stop me. Nothing else does. Not please, not no, not I can't, because you will say all three and mean the opposite."
"That's arrogant."
"It's true. Say it back."
"Stop or red," I said.
"Take off the robe."
I took it off.
He looked at me with his elbows on his knees, taking his time.
I stood there in the lamplight and for once did not want to cover anything.
"Egg," he said.
It was on the nightstand in its velvet pouch.
I picked it up, and turned my back on him to get on the bed, and he said, "No. Face me."
I faced him.
I put it in while he watched, on my knees on the gray comforter, and what I felt go through my whole body had nothing to do with shame.
"Lie back," he said. "Hands flat on the bed at your sides. They stay there until I tell them otherwise."
I lay back.
The egg woke up on the lowest hum I had ever felt, so low I thought for a second it was my pulse.
"Tell me what you feel," Beau said.
"Nothing yet."
"Liar."
He turned it up one notch.
I felt it then, a deep slow warmth, low in my belly, with no hurry in it.
My hips shifted on the bed.
"Don't," he said. "Be still. Let it come to you."
I tried.
The hum climbed, and I lay there with my hands flat and my heels sliding in the comforter.
