Chapter 17: Rug
It rained all Sunday, and by two o'clock we had stopped pretending we would go anywhere.
The dogs lay on the couch in a single heap with Waffles's chin on Tank's ribs.
The balcony door ran with water, and the room smelled of the coffee we hadn't finished.
I lay on my own living-room rug in his flannel shirt, with the buttons undone, and watched him walk over from the kitchen.
He was in his boxers.
He had a dish towel over one shoulder for no reason I could discover.
"Come here," I said.
"I'm coming."
"Take that off."
"The towel?" he asked.
"All of it."
He dropped the towel and the boxers on the arm of the chair.
Then he lowered himself down onto the rug beside me on his elbow.
There was no clock in the room, and no truck to move.
I had never in my adult life had an afternoon with nowhere to be.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi."
"You look good on the floor."
"I look like I fell off the couch," I said.
"You look like you live here."
My chest did something painful.
I put my hand on his jaw and kissed him, slow, the kind of kiss that goes on because nobody wants it to end.
His mouth tasted of coffee and rain.
He kissed my chin and the line of my throat.
He undid the last button of the flannel and opened it, and the cool air moved over my stomach.
"I want you here on Thursdays," I said into his hair.
"I'm here Thursdays."
"I want you here for dinner on a Thursday. At the table. You can make the chili."
He lifted his head.
"You said we'll see," he said.
"I'm seeing."
His eyes went bright, and he kissed me again, hard, and laughed against my mouth.
Then neither of us said anything for a while that wasn't a sound.
He pushed the flannel off my shoulders.
He kissed the freckles one at a time, and I let my head fall back on the rug.
He took each breast in his mouth in turn, slowly, with his hand under the other.
