Chapter 8: The Fence Line
I sat down on my bench at 6:39, and the egg woke up inside me at 6:41.
It was a low hum, hardly there.
I kept my coffee steady.
Behind me, on the bench he had sat on every morning since March, Beau said nothing at all.
Tank leaned his whole weight against my left shin.
The bench ladies came in at 6:45 with their tote bags.
One of them lowered herself onto the slat beside me, the one in the straw hat.
She set a Tupperware of banana bread on her knee.
"Tara, honey, I've been meaning to ask you. What are you feeding that dog?"
"Kibble," I said. "The grain-free kind."
The hum climbed.
It went from low to something with an edge on it, and it came up through me, warm and spreading.
I crossed my ankles.
"She's gotten round," the lady said, and patted Waffles, who was asleep on my foot. "Not that it's a bad thing. Mine did, at her age. Do you do the fountain water?"
"The what?"
"The fountain water. Is it good for them?"
The egg jumped.
It leaped from the edge to a hard full buzz, and I made a noise that I turned into a cough.
"I'm sorry," the lady said. "Are you all right?"
"Allergies."
"In October?"
"Ragweed," I said, in a tiny voice, and she nodded, satisfied.
My thighs were locked together so tightly that they ached.
I stared at the crepe myrtle past the fountain and thought about my lawyer's invoice, the one for two thousand one hundred dollars.
Still the buzz went through me from behind my navel to the soles of my feet.
"I think the fountain's fine," I said. "As long as they don't drink too much of it."
"That's what I always say."
