Chapter 15: The Window Seat
Kirill was already dressed by the time I found my towel.
He stood at the bottom of the basement stairs on the phone.
He was speaking Russian in a voice so calm it made the hair on my arms stand up.
I knew that voice.
My father had used it the night before he buried somebody.
"Kirill. Hang up."
He looked at me.
"My driver has a broken jaw. He has two little girls."
"I know."
"Then you know what happens next."
"Yes. You burn something of his, and he burns something of yours, and every family in the city says, see, the Russians, Vin was right." I took the phone out of his hand and ended the call myself. "He needs this war. It's the only thing holding his chair up."
He let me keep the phone.
That was the first thing he'd ever let anybody take from him, Nadia told me later.
"So what do you want?" he said.
"I want to end it myself. In the window."
The restaurant on Passyunk had new glass by Sunday.
The owner had been my father's friend.
