Chapter 17: The Back Room
Kirill didn't answer her right away.
He looked at the red dress for a second.
Then he turned to the man at the door and said something in Russian, three short sentences.
The man nodded and went out through the back.
"Alone, no," Kirill said to Romina. "This is my house, and that's my fiancée. And tonight is my sister's birthday. You wait."
"How long?"
"Until I've had cake."
He walked back into the dining room.
I didn't follow him.
I went behind the bar and poured myself a glass of Nadia's cherry juice.
Then I sat on the last stool at the far end, under the low lamp.
Romina sat at the other end.
She ordered vodka from the bartender in a soft voice.
Then she ignored me for forty minutes.
I'll give her that.
She was good at it.
In the dining room they sang to Nadia again for no reason, and somebody broke a plate on purpose, and the Temple kids screamed.
