Chapter 21: Judgment
On Sunday they put a sixth chair at the round table.
The restaurant in the Italian Market had closed again for the day, but this time it wasn't the back room.
It was the whole place.
The tables had been pushed to the walls.
The families stood behind them in their church clothes, three and four deep, all the way to the door.
The five old men sat at the round table in the middle with the white cloth and the grappa.
The sixth chair was between the oldest one and the window.
When I came in, he stood up.
So did the other four.
I'd known them my whole life.
None of them had ever stood up for me.
"Signora Antonova," the oldest said. "Sit."
I sat.
Kirill stood behind my chair with his hands folded, his left arm stiff under his jacket.
He didn't sit.
He wasn't invited to.
He didn't seem to mind.
Vin sat alone in a chair in the middle of the floor, where the shooter had sat the last time.
No captains beside him.
No Romina on his arm.
His mother stood against the far wall in black, with her pearls in her hand instead of on her neck.
