Chapter 9: The Feast
Kirill looked at the number in the mirror for a long second.
Then he looked at the road.
"So now we know."
"Now I know," I said. "Vin will say I bought a phone at a gas station and typed her number into it."
"Then we don't tell Vin," Kirill said. "We tell everyone else."
The Feast on 9th Street was the next Saturday.
Every family in South Philly came out for it.
They carried the saint down the middle of the street on a platform with money pinned to her ribbons, and the old women walked behind her saying the rosary, and the men stood outside the cafes with their arms folded deciding who was important this year.
The Cammaratas always had the long table outside the cafe on the corner.
Vin at the head.
His mother at his right.
This year, in my chair at his left, Romina in a white dress with a white scarf over her hair.
I walked down the middle of 9th Street behind the saint.
Benno walked on one side of me in his flat cap.
Nadia walked on the other side in a black dress and enormous sunglasses, eating a cannoli she'd bought from the first stand we passed.
"I'm here to look scary," she'd said in the car.
"You're eating a cannoli."
"Scarily."
Kirill had stayed at the end of the street in his car, because a pakhan walking into the Feast would have been a war.
"Curb," he'd said, before I could say it.
People saw me.
The rosary stopped in a ripple, row by row.
By the time I reached the corner, the band had stopped too.
