Chapter 15: Sunday at Ignazio's

Ignazio's house was red brick on a quiet street in Morningside.

There was a statue of the Virgin in the front bed.

Dilly wouldn't go without the cat.

"She says she has to come," she told me in the car. "She says it's her job."

"What job?"

"Tasting."

So the cat came, twenty pounds of her, shedding gray fur down Dilly's yellow dress.

Gran stayed home with four of Teo's men and the television.

"Bring me a cannoli," she said. "And a fork from his good silver. He owes me."

Ignazio opened the door himself in a cream cardigan and an apron that said KISS THE COOK.

"My family," he said, and his eyes filled up right there on the step.

He kissed Teo on both cheeks.

Teo let him.

I watched my husband smile at the man who'd smothered his father, and I've never been so proud of anybody.

The dining room was long and hot and full of people.

The six old men from Teo's office, their wives in fur and gold, their grown sons.

The heavy man with the unlit cigar sat at the end with a napkin tucked in his collar.
